Gibbney's diary of the 1950 and 1952 Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions to Heard Island. The diaries provide a detailed account of life and conditions on the island as well as his research into the Island seal population and other island fauna. The diary also throws light on other significant events, including the medical emergency and eventual evacuation of the medical officer, Dr Serge Udovikoff, in July 1950, and the deaths of radio operator Dick Hoseason and dog hadler, Alastair (Jock) Forbes in May 1952. The collection consists of Gibney's handwritten diary; a hard copy transcript that includes maps supplied by Gibney and inserted to assist in understanding the diary and an electronic version of the transcript.
